Bangkok Airways, Thailand's first privately owned scheduled domestic airline, is a full-service carrier rather than a budget one. Bangkok Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) is its main base; since October 2023 it has also flown to Koh Samui from Bangkok Don Mueang Airport (DMK). It also built and owns the airport at Koh Samui, one of three Thai airports it owns.

The Samui hub, and why it matters

Bangkok Airways built Samui Airport and still owns and operates it. The airport opened in 1989 as Thailand's first privately owned one. It built and owns the airports at Sukhothai and Trat as well, all three of which its own site calls its boutique airports.

Bangkok Airways is the airline flying its own aircraft into Samui. Thai Airways withdrew its own aircraft from the route in September 2018 and now sells it as a codeshare on Bangkok Airways. The British Airways tie-up announced in 2024 is a codeshare too.

A Samui flight sold by Thai Airways or British Airways under these codeshares is operated by Bangkok Airways, using Bangkok Airways aircraft and crew.

Where it flies

From Bangkok it flies to Koh Samui, Chiang Mai, Krabi, Phuket, Sukhothai and Trat. Three of those go to airports it owns: Bangkok to Koh Samui, Bangkok to Sukhothai and Bangkok to Trat.

Koh Samui is the second hub. From there the airline flies to Bangkok, Phuket, Krabi, Chiang Mai and Pattaya, which is served by U-Tapao Airport. A few of its pairs touch neither Bangkok nor Samui, including Chiang Mai to Phuket.

Since 29 October 2023 the Bangkok to Koh Samui service has also operated from Don Mueang, not only from Suvarnabhumi. Check which of the two Bangkok airports your booking uses before you set off for one of them.

The lounge every passenger gets

Every Bangkok Airways passenger gets lounge access, including on the cheapest economy fare. The Boutique Lounge has seating, snacks, soft drinks, tea and coffee, and Wi-Fi, still open to every cabin as of 2026. That is the practical difference between this airline and a budget carrier on the same route.

The domestic Boutique Lounge was refurbished in June 2025. A new lounge opened at Don Mueang in November 2025. A paid upgrade to the Blue Ribbon Club Lounge, which is the business class lounge, is offered where that lounge exists.

The fleet

The Airbus A319-100 is the backbone, with eleven in service as of August 2026. The Airbus A320-200 remains in the fleet in small numbers and is no longer a mainstay. The turboprop is the ATR 72-600, of which there are about ten.

The older ATR 72-500 has gone from the fleet, replaced by the 72-600. In August 2025 the airline agreed to buy ten to twelve more ATR 72-600s, with deliveries from the last quarter of 2026 through 2028, as part of rebuilding towards its pre-pandemic size.

Baggage

Checked allowances scale by cabin: Economy is the lowest, then Premium Economy, then Blue Ribbon business class, with a smaller allowance for infants. Check the current allowances on the airline's own baggage page before you pack.

Excess baggage on domestic flights is charged per kilo. Buying it in advance costs less than settling it at check-in. Cabin baggage is limited enough to catch out anyone used to a larger allowance.

FlyerBonus

FlyerBonus, the frequent flyer programme, now runs to three tiers: Priority, Premier and Premier Plus. Premier Plus sits at the top and is reached with 40,000 qualifying points or 50 qualifying sectors in twelve months.

What catches people out

Bangkok Airways treats its published boarding deadline as final. Passengers arriving after it are not accepted for boarding.

Traveller reports describe stricter cabin-baggage enforcement on the ATR turboprops to Trat and Sukhothai, where an oversized bag may be moved to the hold at the gate.

Prepaid excess baggage costs less than paying at the check-in desk. Weigh the bag before you leave for the airport.
