Thai Lion Air is a Thai low-cost carrier, registered as Thai Lion Mentari Co., Ltd. and flying under the International Air Transport Association (IATA) code SL. It has been in operation since 2013 and is based at Don Mueang International Airport in Bangkok. It belongs to the Lion Group, alongside Lion Air, Wings Air, Batik Air Indonesia, Super Air Jet and Batik Air Malaysia.

The airline says it is an IATA member and holds IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) certification.

Baggage on Thai Lion Air

What comes with a ticket depends on which fare you buy, and the airline currently runs two domestic fare tables side by side, plus a separate one for international flights.

What your fare includes

The airline publishes its free checked allowances on its own route and baggage page. The first domestic table covers bookings and travel from 1 July 2024.

A second domestic table, headed New Fare Family, covers bookings and travel from 4 August 2026. Both are live on the airline's page at once, so check which fare names your booking uses.

International fares use a third table, for bookings and travel from 1 July 2024.

FareFree checked baggage
PromoNone
Economy20 kg

Promo in the older domestic table and Saver in the New Fare Family include no free checked baggage. On either fare, checked baggage is a separate purchase.

No individual checked bag may weigh more than 32 kg, and total baggage may not exceed 45 kg per passenger. The 32 kg per-item limit does not apply to mobility equipment.

Adding a checked bag before you fly

Prepaid baggage is sold as Lion Baggage, added up to 3 hours before departure and in more than one transaction if needed. Buying in advance costs less than buying the same allowance at the airport counter, and weight beyond your allowance is charged by the kilogram.

Passengers on the same booking can share an allowance, but only if they present themselves together at the counter. Prepaid baggage and paid seat selection are otherwise non-refundable. If Thai Lion Air changes the schedule or cancels the flight, they transfer to the new flight or may be refunded in full.

Cabin baggage

Cabin baggage is limited to 7 kg per passenger and 56 x 36 x 23 cm, and the bag has to fit under the seat in front or in an enclosed storage compartment. Infants get no cabin allowance.

You get one item on board, not a bag plus a personal item. The airline's rule is that the item may be a combination of any two of the following: cabin bag or a laptop bag or a handbag, all inside the same 7 kg. So a laptop bag counts towards your allowance.

Anything over 7 kg or oversize is not allowed in the cabin and may be transferred to checked baggage at the gate, with an excess charge per kilogram. Fruit may be carried if properly packed, sealed and not eaten on board, but durian, jackfruit and other pungent fruit are barred from cabin and hold alike.

Where Thai Lion Air flies

Thai Lion Air states that it operates 16 domestic routes and 32 international routes. Thirteen of the domestic pairs run from Don Mueang, in both directions.

The other three skip Bangkok altogether: Hat Yai to Udon Thani, Chiang Mai to Pattaya, and Pattaya to Udon Thani. The airline calls that airport Pattaya (U-Tapao), which is U-Tapao Airport.

Its 32 international routes are grouped under China including Macao, India, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Singapore, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Nepal and South Korea.

Baggage rules differ from airline to airline. Our pages for Thai AirAsia and Nok Air set out theirs.

Checking in for a Thai Lion Air flight

Online check-in opens 24 hours before departure. It closes 45 minutes before departure on domestic flights and 2 hours before on international flights.

Online check-in runs through a separately branded third-party app and website called BookCabin, where you pick SL from a drop-down list. It is switched off entirely on flights to and from Singapore and Macau. Once you have checked in, changing the flight or buying add-ons is not permitted.

At the airport, domestic counters open 2 hours before departure and close 45 minutes before it; international counters open 3 hours before and close 1 hour before. Be at the gate 30 minutes before departure: it closes 20 minutes before, and arriving after that means not being accepted for travel.

Foreign passengers on a domestic flight need a passport, an alien identification card or a travel document for foreigners, valid and unexpired on the day of travel. Airports of Thailand states that Terminal 1 at Don Mueang is used for international flights and Terminal 2 for domestic flights.

Power banks

Power banks are carry-on only, capped at 100 watt-hours (Wh) or 20,000 milliamp-hours (mAh) and limited to two per passenger, each individually protected against short circuit in a protective pouch and carried on the person or in the seat pocket in flight. A power bank that does not state its capacity in mAh or Wh is prohibited on board in all cases.

Seats, meals and other extras

Seat selection, meals and travel insurance are sold separately; some special-assistance services may carry a fee.

Seat selection

Lion Seat Selection is sold up to 4 hours before departure, on the website, through the contact centre, the airline's LINE account @lionairgroup and at ticket counters. Choosing a seat on board instead costs more. If you do not buy one, you are allocated a seat at check-in.

Meals

Lion Meal is a hot meal pre-ordered rather than bought on board, and nothing can be ordered or changed within 48 hours of departure. It is sold on the 13 Don Mueang domestic routes but not on Udon Thani to Hat Yai or either Pattaya pair.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is an optional extra, sold as Lion Care and Lion Care Plus, and it is non-refundable in all circumstances.

Special assistance

Special assistance is requested through the contact centre or info@lionairthai.com up to 48 hours before departure, and the airline notes that some of these services may be subject to a fee. Baby buggies, manual wheelchairs, mobility devices and walking frames are carried free of charge.

Booking, changing and cancelling

Where you can book

The conditions of carriage name three ways to pay: on the website, through the contact centre by credit card, and at a sales counter by credit card or cash. The contact-centre option carries a processing fee per passenger, and cash is not accepted at counters in Singapore or Indonesia.

Changing a flight

A flight or date change has to be made at least 4 hours before the original departure, and inside 4 hours it is not permitted. There is a charge for each change, per person and per flight, and route changes are not permitted at all.

A name correction is free for up to three characters with the same pronunciation and charged beyond that. Name and surname changes are otherwise prohibited once the booking is confirmed.

Cancelling, and what comes back

If you cancel voluntarily, the airline's conditions of carriage allow you to request a refund only of the Departure Passenger Service Charge, which is the airport tax. No other charges or fares are refunded.

Meals, insurance and other services issued as an electronic miscellaneous document are non-refundable. Prepaid baggage and paid seat selection are otherwise non-refundable. If Thai Lion Air changes the schedule or cancels the flight, they transfer to the new flight or may be refunded in full.

Where the airline itself cancels or changes a schedule, it says it acts under Civil Aviation Board Regulation No. 101, effective 20 May 2025.

The airline's frequent flyer programme is CabinClub, formerly known as Thai Lion Air Club. Joining is free, from age 2, with parental or guardian consent under 18.

The aircraft Thai Lion Air flies

The fleet page lists two Boeing types and marks every configuration a one-class layout, and the About Us page describes both as Economy. The airline says it was the first in Thailand to operate the Boeing 737-900ER with 215 seats.
